Rush/Cook County - Cairo Children's Collaboration
Bill Hayden at Rush/Cook County Children's in Chicago, has been involved in
the formation of an association between his ICU and the Pediatric ICU at the
Cairo Children's Hospital. The goals are to facilitate as much communication
as we can with their PICU and hospital as is possible.
In the first few months, they have focused on a number of things: monthly
mailings of copies of aritcles reviewed in journal club; sponsoring
memberships for the Egyptian attendings in the SCCM; visit by Rush faculty
to Cairo as visiting attending. Future plans include facilitating their
joining the PICUnet, continued SCCM sponsorship, sending textbooks and
articles regularly, visits to Cairo by physicians (attendings, fellows,
residents), and hosting visits by their medical staff (attendings, fellows,
residents).
Therefore, opportunities exist for US physicians to visit Cairo tax free, be
hosted by some great people, see very interesting medicine, learn the
problems of medical care in Egyptian perspective and have a lot of time to
see the wonderful sights. The only requirement is that the visitor should
have an open mind and be willing to round and conferences. I guarantee a
memorable experience.
Also, when their staff visits, Bill may be contacting some of the USA PICU
programs to arrange visits for them.
Interested parties may learn more by contacting Greg Stidham
(fishley@aol.com) or Bill Hayden directly (WHayden@rush.edu).
APF---The American Physicians Fellowship for Medicine in Israel-- maintains a registry of American physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals who have agreed to volunteer their services in Israel in case of a major medical emergency. Those who are called upon will be flown to Israel and housed at the expense of the State. The APF Emergency Medical Volunteers for Israel Registry is dedicated to providing coverage for Israeli medical personnel called into the reserves, thereby ensuring the continuity of health care to civilians during a major emergency. Of course, we hope that we never again will need to mobilize our volunteers for this purpose. But, we have nonetheless been requested to keep our database updated and ready for any contingency.
Details about this opportunity, as well as complete information about other programs of APF, are available at http://www.apfmed.org, by email to apf@apfmed.org, or the address and telephone numbers below.

We are looking for volunteers for an unprecedented event! We are in the planning stages of "Smiles of Hope", a project that will involve 18 countries and 31 sites visited during a 9 week period. At those sites, we will operate on more than 5,000 children. We will transfer 250,000 lbs. of medical supplies and the project will involve over 3,000 volunteers worldwide. We will be leaving telemedicine capability in every country with computer linkups to universities and educators in the United States and around the world. This "university without walls" will create educational programs leading mission countries toward self-sufficiency. At the same time, we will furnish each country with a full set of operating room equipment and instruments. This equipment will be left behind with the promise that each country will do the equivalent of one free case a day when we're gone.If you are interested in volunteering your medical skills and talent for this project and need more details contact: Matthew Bruce at mbruce@operationsmile.org and visit our website at www.operationsmile.org
