Introduction

T. Bojko and J. Verger welcomed all in attendance.

Introduction of Co-Chairpersons and meeting attendees.

Each attendee described his/her role as an APN or supervisor of APNs. Identification of diversity of job roles and settings

Review of past minutes.

T. Bojko reviewed the purpose of the committee for all new attendees.  This committee was formed to explore and help define the role of the APN in pediatric critical care throughout the country.  The committee would then have input and influence in the role development and how it is utilized.

The committee could take whatever form its members choose but be multidisciplinary and committed to working as a group

Please see prior minutes posted on Peds CCM web site.

Committee meets twice a year Ð at the SCCM Scientific Symposium and the Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium.  Meeting at Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium scheduled for September 2001 cancelled.

National Certification

J. Verger Ð Informed group that the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses (NCBPNP/N) had agreed to develop an acute care pediatric nurse practitioner certification exam.  This is the only group to convene nationally and look at practice standards, educational standards and preparation.

All are encouraged to participate in the development of an exam.  This is meant to be a multi-tiered group for exam preparation.

Educational Objectives/ Training Programs/Content for APNs in Pediatric Critical Care

This committee was initially convened as a forum for discussion.  Now the committee can take the initiative for guidelines.  Direction may be taken from people who practice and those who support and/or utilize APNs in pediatric critical care.

Questions raised Ð

  1. Are there places that even offer some level of critical care exposure and training for APNs?  Paradigm exists between nursing leadership and the actual practitioner Ð not utilizing the APN to the fullest of their abilities.
  2. Are there educational guidelines for unit- based practice or for mentoring?  Committee could work towards qualifying this
  3. College is supportive of goal/guidelines.  Ann Thompson- Pediatric Section Leader Ð may utilize template for guidelines.

Educational and Practice Standards for APNs in Pediatric Critical Care

Proposal for development of subcommittee.  Discussion of what makes a qualified critical care NP.  Question was raised how many formally trained critical care NPs vs. primary care trained NPs.

What makes a qualified critical care NP is not so much what educational background that a person starts from but need to have the clinical experience or knowledge t recognize a patient and their acuity.  Subcommittee to work on the development of guidelines (not meant to be a limitation or minimally accepted standard) which are reflective of the multidisciplinary population of the PICU

Suggestions Ð development of set of competencies for procedures; G. Delametter Ð case presentations that can be published in book format for the NP group.

Development of Permanent Committee

Need to follow the SCCM guidelines for committee membership.  Co-Chairs are the only established committee positions.  Bylaws stipulate 2 year term

Soliciting volunteers for medical co-chair and APN co-chair for the next year.  Will need to establish a selection process for future positions.

Alice Ackerman volunteered for medical position.

Update on SCCM subcommittee- Document Draft of Role of NP/PA in ICU

Separate committee has been formed under the aegis of SCCM Ð initial draft to be completed March 2002

No person in attendance a member of this subcommittee.

Meeting adjourned 0845.

Minutes submitted by Maureen A. Madden, PCCNP

Next meeting to be held at the SCCM Pediatric Critical Care Colloquium in October 2002, in San Diego, CA.
