Fellowship director's Meeting - Chicago, IL

Date: 9/17/98
Time: 12 - 2pm

Topics Discussed:

  1. Revision of ACGME guidelines - where it stands: The revision of the Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Accreditation Guidelines is expected to be reviewed at the RRC meeting in October 1998. Whatever changes recommended by the RRC and ACGME will again be sent to all program directors for further review. Final decisions remain probably one year away. (Brilli)

  2. Fellowship Website and communication to the group (informational and how is it working): Dr. Barry Markovitz again reminded the group about the Fellowship Directors database and website. He also reminded everyone about participating in the Website Journal Club by sending articles and completing the survey about how often the journal club website is used.

  3. Announcements from the Board of Pediatrics: Dr. Brilli, after talking to Dr. Notterman (ABP Sub-Board Chair), announced the desire of the Board to strictly enforce the research criteria for fellows to sit for the Sub-Board certifying exam.

  4. Research Curriculum: Discussion regarding the development of a common research curriculum for Fellowship Training was lead by Randall Wetzel. He presented the results of his survey which clearly indicates interest among fellowship directors in developing a common curriculum for research. Dr. Wetzel will continue with a curriculum develpment by gathering current documents from fellowship directors and compiling a summary document. It was also decided that Dr. Brilli (as Chair of the Fellowship directors Section) would send a letter to the Committee of Sub-Board Chairs, requesting an outline of the type of educational items the Sub-Board expects fellows to know, as part of the certifying process.

  5. The impaired fellow (Storgion): Dr. Storgion presented proposals and information about the impaired or over stressed Fellow. Discussion took place about how to recognize the distressed fellow who is on the edge and to help and guide the fellow to obtain help.

  6. Fellowship Match Program: Discussion took place about beginning an NRMP matching program for critical care medicine training programs. Most directors present seemed supportive. Dr. Harris Baden suggested that the process is easy and Peds Cardiology will begin a match program for the year 2000. It was decided that Dr. Brill would send out a brief Survey assessing official interest in a Match Program.

  7. Project Impact and the Virtual PICU: Discussion took place about the SCCM's decision to strongly consider supporting the development of the Peds version of Project Impact (relational database). The cost of data gathering and the purchase of the product was discussed. The interest of the PICU community was sought and is most likely dependent upon cost (especially personnel required to gather data) and the usability of the product. More to follow on this topic.

  8. Should we talk about the hospitalist as part of our training programs again? Not Discussed
