Installation instructions for PIM The Program To install the program you need: 1 3 installation disks. 2 A PC running Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. 3 Processor 386 or better. 4 At least 4 Mb memory. 5 At least 4 Mb free hard disk space. We have always intended to produce an installation program, this might happen with the planned Windows 95 version. The program was written using Delphi a visual Pascal (Borland), and relies on the Borland Database Engine for the interface to the data tables. Because of the way the program works there are three steps to installation and configuration. 1. The Borland Database engine needs to be installed.(disk 1 & 2). 2. The program needs to be installed (disk 3). 3. The Borland Database Engine needs to know where the program is. If you have any misapprehensions about the installation, please contact us preferably by email. Because we are giving the program away in an effort to introduce the PIM scoring methodology to a greater audience, we can only provide a limited amount of support. NOTES Do not install the Borland Database Engine if you already have Paradox for Windows (version 5.0 or greater). Go to step 4. If you are installing the version that you obtained from the internet please replace the a:\ instructions with the appropriate drive/directory you have the files in. 1. Start your computer, when in windows start the set-up program. (Disk1) by Windows 3.1 or 3.11 Run a:\setup.exe from file manager select FILE then RUN. Windows95 START then run a:\setup.exe from START then RUN. Follow the on screen instructions, if you are not sure about the options choose the default values. Please take a note of where the IDAP directory is, you will need to know this to configure the program. 2. When prompted insert the second disk. 3. When complete remove the disk and restart your computer to allow the installation to become active. Please use the approved method of exiting windows rather than switching your computer off. 4. Insert Disk3, this disk has the data files and the program files compressed into one file. To install run a:\install.exe (as you did above). You will be prompted to select a folder to install to, the entry should be C:\ click ok when all the files are unzipped. This will create a directory called PIM, with PIM.EXE and the help file, a sub directory called PIM_DATA with a number of data files (do not delete any of these they are all essential, without them the program will not function properly). 5. If you try and run PIM.EXE at this stage you will get an error message unknown database alias PIM. This is because you have not told the database engine where the data files are. 6. To configure the alias run (for default installation) C:\IDAPI\bdecfg.exe (if you already have Paradox for windows you need to run (default location) C:\IDAPI\IDAPICFG.EXE) Click on ALIAS tab at the bottom of the BDE Configuration Utility Click on NEW, type PIM in the new alias name box. Alias type is standard. Click on OK. Some new settings will have appeared on the right hand side of the configuration utility. Click in the right hand side between STANDARD and PARADOX, type the path of the data files (for default installation) C:\PIM\PIM_DATA Exit the configuration utility saving the results when prompted. You can now run the program (default installation) C:\PIM\PIM.EXE You can create a program manager as appropriate. The password is hubris There are 10 dummy records in the database, once you have started to enter your own data these may be deleted using the - button in the data entry page. The program does not like running with no records so ensure that you enter some of your own records before deleting all the dummy records. ____________________________________________ INSTALL.TXT Addendum June 6, 1997 1. Unzipping the files with PKZIP may result in a warning that it can not create the DISK_1 and DISK_2 directories. You should be able to ignore these warnings, as the directories will already be created. Specifying the -d option ensures that the directory structure is maintained. 2. If your PC is on a network, in addition to the PIM alias and path, you may have to give the BDE software an existing location for it to create it's user file (PDOXUSRS.NET). To do this, run the bdecfg.exe program, choose the paradox ODBC driver on the drivers page, and enter an existing directory in the NET DIR slot on the right side (e.g., c:\PIM). 3. You may ignore the warning that "Poetry in Motion" software won't work properly under Windows95 unless your screen resolution is at 640 x 480. ____________________________________________ Document last modified June 6, 1997
